Tunisia most likely makes you think of beaches guarded by palm trees and coastal areas arranged to the most modern standards. Contrary to belief, the country offers much more than trees, sand dunes and beaches. If you walk beyond the popular areas on the Mediterranean coast, you will discover a lesser-known Tunisia, a country shrouded in mystery, which many tourists do not know exists. A trip off the beaten track can be an interesting option for adventure-seeking tourists.
The Holy City
Dating back more than 700 years, the holy city of Sidi Bou Said offers countless opportunities for delight. The cobbled streets, the houses with white-painted facades and blue windows, as well as the flowers with a special color, seem to be taken from a story from long ago. For a relaxed vacation, tourists should consider coming here in the off-season, when you don't bump into crazy characters in shorts and with cameras hanging around their necks. After admiring the dreamy views of the Mediterranean Sea, a walk around gives you the chance to better appreciate the dreamy, extremely relaxing atmosphere. It is no coincidence that this destination serves as a source of inspiration for poets, writers, musicians and artists from all fields!
Dates and springs
Irrigated by more than 200 springs, the Tozeur Oasis is one of the most beautiful attractions in North-East Africa. Its luxuriant vegetation, rocks and narrow paths cover an area of more than 400 hectares, offering visitors an escape from the landscape of overcrowded beaches. The Dar Cherait Ethnological Museum allows tourists to appreciate the local social life. Inside you will discover traditional wedding and party costumes, old jewelry, ceramic dishes and old weapons.
Salt and mirages
After a visit to Tozeur, a stop in Chott-el-Jerid is mandatory. Not many views compare to those offered by the magical silver and purple reflections emitted by the thick blanket of salt. Consequently, wearing sunglasses is not a bad idea. The occasional mirage is not unusual in these places. Don't forget to take your camera with you: the colors change here at different times of the day, making everything really spectacular in these places.
Goat and camel fair
Located on the edge of the desert, Douz is the place where you can admire a camel race in the Sahara desert. Even the sunset beyond the horizon line behind the sand dunes is a spectacle in itself. Tourists who want to socialize with the locals must visit this weekly market, frequented by nomadic shepherds, goats and camels. Another attraction is represented by the "International Festival of the Sahara", an event where traditional folklore music is played, weddings are organized, and greyhounds are sent hunting, beyond the sand dunes.
Forests and lakes
There is a part of Tunisia which is gaining more and more popularity and which is completely different from tourist Tunisia. It is about an area in the north of the country, a place known as "Green Tunisia", where the city of Tabarka is located. Blessed by a Mediterranean climate, the landscape here abounds in magnificent forests and lakes.
