Admire the Brandenburg Gate (the heart of Berlin) at night
Visit the Brandenburg Gate , the most representative monument in Berlin, recommended when it gets dark, the gate being lit up and the feeling the view gives you being much stronger than if you visited the monument during the day. In addition, if you arrive in Berlin during the largest Festival of Lights, you will certainly be even more amazed by the way it will be enhanced with the help of lights laser, this impressive monument and landmark of the German capital.
The Brandenburg Gate is the oldest access road to Berlin that is still standing. Built between the years 1788 - 1791 during the reign of Federic Guillermo II, by Carl Gotthard Langhans, after the model of the Acropolis access gate, in Athens, the Brandenburg Gate is a symbol of division and reunification, a monument under which both Nazi torches passed in the 1930s, in the darkest period of human history, but during which Germans also cried for joy, after the reunification of the two Germanys, people who had been separated for more than 50 years.
Climb the Reichstag dome
The Reichstag was the headquarters of the German Parliament during the Nazi era and its burning on the night of February 27/28 was used by the Nazis as a pretext for attacking political opponents.
The Reichstag was not spared by the destruction of the war and was rebuilt after 1945; after the reunification of the two Germanys, in the 90s, the famous British architect Norman Foster was assigned to take care of the restoration of the building, he added the current glass dome that we can still admire today, the Reichstag becoming one of the most touristic sights visited from Berlin. To go up and take advantage of the beauty of the city, all you have to do is book your free entrance on the website of the German Parliament.
Stroll through the Gendarmenmarkt
Gendarmenmarkt could not be missing from the top 9 Berlin tourist attractions because it is said to be the most beautiful market in the city; we say "it is said" because for many tourists this is too crowded to be the most beautiful.
However, the uniqueness of Gendarmenmarkt is due to the two cathedrals that share the same dome, the French Cathedral and the German Cathedral. In the center of the market we can find the Konzerthaus concert hall , considered to be in the top five of the best concert halls in the world due to its acoustics and interior design. If you are a music lover, you can book a ticket to one of the concerts to compare, why not, with the acoustics of the Athenaeum in Bucharest.
Berlin Cathedral - a "must" of tourist attractions
The Berlin Cathedral was built between 1894 and 1905, in the Baroque style, very close to the Imperial Palace of the Hohenzollern dynasty; that's why it functioned as the imperial church and today it houses many of the remains of the members of the royal family. As in the case of most buildings in Berlin, its dome was seriously damaged during the war and the reconstruction works lasted from 1975 to 2002; as a result of these efforts, today it can be admired in all its splendor, as it looked at the inauguration in 1905.
The Berlin Cathedral has one of the most beautiful views of the city. But don't imagine that you can get to admire the landscape so easily - you have to make a little effort, namely to climb 270 steps (not at all practical!). What do you say, dare you? We say it's worth the effort, especially if you want to see Berlin from above.
Take into account the fact that this cathedral also has an elevator for people with disabilities. General admission is around 7 euros and reduced 5 euros (valid for students, children, pensioners and people with disabilities).
Feel like in a story in the Tiergarten park
The Tiergarten park is also called the lung of Berlin. A lung of about 210 hectares, a little more than Herastraul (which has around 187 ha).
The park is Berliners' favorite place to relax - here you can simply lie on the grass, if you have a sunny day, and if you are more energetic, don't hesitate to explore the park by bike, or rowing a boat on the lake. You will be surprised by the beauty of the place and the whole experience will lead you into a fairy tale world.
Visit at least one of the five museums on Museum Island
The Museum Island is a small island surrounded by the waters of the river Spree and which takes its name from the fact that it hosts five large museums: the Pergamon Museum , the Old Museum , the New Museum , the Bode Museum Museum; making a small parenthesis, the largest commemorative gold medal in the world worth 1 million dollars was stolen from here) and the National Art Gallery (Alte Nationalgalerie).
UNESCO declared Museum Island as part of the World Heritage in 1999. We recommend you to visit the New Museum , where you will be able to find the bust of Nefertiti or the Parchment Museum where you will see spectacular ancient collections; however, if you have time and according to your preferences, don't miss the other museums on the island either.
